REPENTANCE:

A GODLY REACTION TO SIN

Ezra 9:1-15

After leading a second exodus from the Babylonian exile back to Jerusalem, Ezra was informed of grievous sin among the leaders of Israel. His reaction of mourning and confession is a precursor to the model of church discipline given to us by Jesus in Matthew 18:15-17. This is an uncomfortable topic for many believers today. As a result, few churches practice biblical church discipline, and the integrity and spiritual health of the church has suffered significantly. Here are some matters we must understand regarding the our own discipline and that of fellow members ensnared by sin:

1. Discipline isn’t pleasant, but it is necessary. Hebrews 12:4-11

2. Discipline isn’t discriminatory. It must be exercised no matter who the offender is. 1 Timothy 5:21

3. Discipline is a good practice that increases knowledge and wisdom. Those who hate being disciplined are

stupid and foolish. Proverbs 1:7, 12:1, &15:5

4. Discipline reveals the love of God. Proverbs 3:12 & Revelation 3:19

5. Discipline leads sinners to repentance. 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 & Galatians 6:1

6. Discipline creates accountability. Matthew 18:15-17 & 1 Timothy 5:19-20

How can you become more faithful in receiving and performing healthy spiritual discipline?
