Timeline of events leading up to Judah’s exile in Babylon:

722 BC – The northern kingdom of Israel is defeated and exiled by Assyria

612 BC – Assyria is conquered by the Babylonians and Medes

605 BC – Babylon defeats Egypt at the Battle of Carchemish, establishing the Babylonian Empire from Persia to Egypt. The Babylonians invade Judah and deport the first wave of exiles to Babylon, including Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah (Daniel 1:1-7).

601 BC – Babylon battles Egypt again. Judah sides with Egypt against Babylon.

597 BC – Jehoiachin becomes king of Judah and Jerusalem is besieged by Babylon again. The king, the prophet Ezekiel, and many others are carried into the second wave of exile.

586 BC – The Babylonians destroy the city of Jerusalem and the temple on the 9th of Av. They carry all remaining treasures along with a third wave of exiles back to Babylon. The exile would last 70 years according to the word of the Lord (Jeremiah 25:9-13).
